Today I thought I’d bring you a story. On my last bookshop foray over Easter, I picked up “Courting the Wild Twin” by Martin Shaw. It’s a short book, two stories and his contemplations. Both stories are about the ‘wild twin’ that came from the womb first and was exiled or rejected for their ‘wildness’. Which is, of course, metaphor for those parts of ourselves that have been exiled, shunned, or squashed - but will eventually demand to seen, heard and re-integrated if we are to become wholly ourselves.
Here is a link to a video animation of Martin Shaw telling the story of The Lindworm, one of the two stories in the book. I’m interested to see how it speaks to you (it has been profoundly working on me this past week!) As you watch it, remember that everything in myth is metaphor.
If you enjoy Martin Shaw’s storytelling, he has a whole series on YouTube called Jawbone (I’ve been binge-listening). There are some wonderful teaching tales there to listen to and contemplate. In this episode he uses stories to illustrate the art of storytelling and in this one he tells about his encounter with an angel in a limousine in Vermont and shares a story about seeing with the eye of wonder.
I’ll bring you more of my contemplations on these stories as they percolate through me, but for now just let them flow over and through you. What speaks to you as you hear them?
Until next time, enjoy some story time… and the medicine stories bring.
